A ground-fault circuit interrupter, usually labeled GFCI, is designed to shut off power quickly when electrical current follows an unintended path. These devices are especially important where electricity may be used near water, but homeowners often have questions when an outlet trips, will not reset, or appears to control other outlets nearby.
What a GFCI is designed to do
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission explains that a GFCI monitors the current flowing through a circuit. If it detects current leaking from the intended path—potentially through a person—it interrupts the circuit to reduce the risk of severe electric shock or electrocution.

Where GFCI protection is commonly used
GFCI protection is commonly associated with bathrooms, kitchens, garages, basements, outdoor receptacles, and other areas where people may contact water or grounded surfaces. The exact requirements for a new installation or renovation depend on the electrical code and local rules that apply to the project. How to test a GFCI outlet
CPSC guidance recommends testing GFCIs after installation, at least monthly, after a power failure, and according to the manufacturer’s instructions. For a receptacle-style device, plug in a lamp and turn it on. Press TEST; the lamp should turn off. Then press RESET; power should return.
- If the lamp stays on after TEST, stop relying on that GFCI for protection
- If the device will not reset or restore power, it may need replacement or further diagnosis
- If the outlet is warm, discolored, buzzing, sparking, or smells burned, leave it unused and call an electrician
Why one GFCI can affect several outlets
A receptacle GFCI can be wired to protect additional outlets farther downstream on the same branch circuit. That is why a tripped device in a garage, bathroom, kitchen, or exterior location may interrupt power at a different outlet. Resetting the correct upstream GFCI can restore the group, but repeated trips still need a cause—not repeated resets.
Why a GFCI may keep tripping
A trip can be caused by moisture, damaged cords or appliances, deteriorated wiring, incorrect connections, or current leaking to ground. Unplugging portable equipment can help identify whether one appliance is involved, but do not keep resetting a device that trips immediately or repeatedly.
- Moisture in an outdoor or damp-location box
- A damaged appliance, cord, or plug
- A wiring or connection problem
- A worn or defective GFCI device
- A fault on another outlet protected downstream
A GFCI is not the same as a regular breaker
A standard circuit breaker primarily protects wiring from excessive current. A GFCI protects people by responding to current leaking from its intended path. Some GFCI circuit breakers provide both functions, but a receptacle GFCI should not be treated as a solution for an overloaded circuit or faulty wiring.
When to call an electrician
Arrange professional service when a GFCI fails its test, will not reset after connected equipment is unplugged, trips repeatedly, has visible damage, or is associated with heat, odor, buzzing, sparking, or a shock or tingling sensation.
